Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
PEI designed this building to accommodate the requirements for the most advanced patient care and medical teaching at one of the world’s most highly respected hospitals. The new building replaces an earlier facility damaged in an earthquake but repurposed for research. Fitting the largest building on the UCLA campus into a constrained site without overwhelming its neighbors proved a major design challenge.

The selection of materials and colors and the abundance of natural light in the interiors go a long way to change visitors’ associations of hospital environments. The atmosphere is about encouraging a positive attitude and good health rather than the trauma of illness.
