Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Headquarters
Phase II of the headquarters of ICBC, the world’s largest bank, completes a key site in the new financial district of Beijing on West Chang An Street, close to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Phase I of the headquarters introduced the design theme of “round heaven and square ground”, resulting in a square building with a circular landscaped courtyard, the first half of which was completed in 1998.

The program for the second phase totals 63,500 sq.m is accommodated in a 10-story building with levels.
The exterior treatment respects the earlier building, but the interior plan is different. Pei’s design incorporated materials that are elegantly understated and impeccably detailed, projecting an image of quiet, unpretentious efficiency.
